The Impact of Tourism on Ocean Ecosystems

Imagine arriving at a tourist site, only to be met with hundreds of other visitors all clamoring to see the same thing.

The effects of overtourism weigh heavily on local communities and have a large environmental impact. A high population of people also detracts from the natural beauty of the site. Unsustainable tourism practices can lead to habitat degradation, especially in fragile coastal ecosystems. Tourism also generates waste, like plastic, that can find its way into the ocean. This pollution is not only detrimental to marine life, but also affects water quality and overall marine ecosystem health. These are the problems that eco-tourism aims to avoid.

So, what is Eco-tourism?

Eco-tourism involves responsible travel to different areas, with very little environmental impact. It makes people aware of the need to conserve and protect the environment and gets them to engage. Cape RADD recognizes the balance between experiencing marine wonders and protecting ocean ecosystems. We place education at the forefront of our tours.

By sharing knowledge about marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and conservation challenges, our eco-trips empower you to become informed advocates for the ocean’s protection. The revenue generated by eco-tours is also put toward our marine research and conservation efforts. We emphasize responsible behaviour, which minimizes disruption to marine ecosystems through the use of low impact practices like responsible wildlife viewing and respecting wildlife habitats. In other words, we leave the marine environment in the same condition it was found in.

Eco-tourism also brings endangered species into focus, kickstarting efforts for their protection and survival.

Citizen Science briefing on the unique diversity of False Bay

There’s a world of benefits waiting for you when you embark on our eco-trips. Besides soaking up the allure of False Bay’s waters, let’s dive into what makes these experiences truly exceptional.

Dive into the World of Marine Science

Picture this: you’re not just an observer, you’re an active participant in the world of marine science. Our eco-trips are hands-on, showing both students and curious visitors what it means to be a marine explorer. From the moment you slip beneath the waves, you’re a contributor to the ongoing scientific understanding of our oceans. An example of this is our Snorkel and SCUBA for Science programs, where participants are on the lookout for our endemic friends, the Puffadder shysharks, for our Finspotter database.

Other activities include our Seal Snorkel – where we swim with the cutest pups of the sea.
For those with a passion for marine conservation, the False Bay expedition involves visitors venturing out on the yacht, Boaz, to partake in microplastic sampling – a crucial step in understanding and combating plastic pollution in our seas – and BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) deployment, where we witness the incredible diversity of marine species that call False Bay home.

Skills for a Lifetime

Our dives aren’t only about getting up close and personal with incredible marine life; they’re also about gaining practical skills that you’re forever equipped with no matter where life takes you. This includes the use of tape measures, transects and cameras. These aren’t just techniques for our trips, they’re skills that empower you in fields like marine biology, environmental science, and beyond.
